LABORATORY SUPERVISOR & BIOLOGICAL SAFETY OFFICER

Laboratory Supervisor & Biological Safety Officer Biology Department Founded in 1848, Rhodes College is a highly selective, private, residential, undergraduate college. We invite applications for a Laboratory Supervisor & Biology Stockroom Manager. This position has primary responsibility for introductory biology lab preparation, set-up and take-down, to include supervised trial experiments; supervise departmental work-study and RSAP students; handle departmental purchases and payments; monitor departmental budgets, maintain inventory of laboratory stockroom and equipment; oversee maintenance and organization of department facilities, supplies, and equipment to ensure a neat, clean, and efficient working environment; oversee primary care of rodents and monitor operation of animal facility; help maintain compliance with chemical, biological and laboratory safety requirements; undertake responsibility for safe storage and disposal of chemicals and biologicals in department; maintain equipment and supplies for laboratory safety such as eye wash stations and showers, first aid kits, and biohazard waste disposal supplies; review Rhodes laboratory practices for biological safety compliance with local, state, federal (including NIH and OSHA) rules and regulations; report problems to Chief Environmental Safety Officer and to Chair of Academic Department in which any problems are found; routinely monitor and maintain performance of non-ambient storage, liquid nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water purification equipment, and similar facilities; travel locally for occasional departmental purchases. Bachelor’s degree in Biology or similar major with extensive coursework in Biology required. Excellent communication skills are required. Demonstrated ability to organize numerous projects, consistently meet deadlines, tolerate frequent interruptions, and exercise professional judgment. Experience working in a laboratory environment, knowledge of laboratory procedures and operations and supervisory skills preferred.
