Description: The University of Arkansas Facilities Management Department is now accepting applications/resume’s for a Health Physicist/Campus Radiation Safety Officer. The position reports to the Manager of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety in coordination with the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). The RSO is responsible for effecting actions, implementing procedures, and monitoring activities providing for the functional implementation, administration, and oversight of the Radiation Safety Program (RSP). Duties and responsibilities of the RSO include, but may not be limited to: • maintaining the Type A Broad Scope license as issued by the Arkansas Department of Health; • maintaining current registrations of machine sources of radiation; • ensuring that the University of Arkansas is always in compliance with applicable agency regulations, operating licenses, and institutional policies; • ensuring all radioactive materials are handled according to the principle of ALARA; • ensuring all radiation producing equipment is properly installed, accurately registered, surveyed, and safely used; • preparing the Annual Report of the RSP and other reports as required; • developing, preparing and delivering Radiation Safety Training for Authorized Users (AU) and others, as required; • provide technical assistance and/or guidance to the AU and others in the faculty and research community; • acting as liaison with regulatory agencies; • interpreting personnel dose reports and administering the dosimetry program; • participating in the preparation, development, and submittal of RSP policies and procedures; • approving all purchases of isotopes, receiving the packages when they are shipped, inspecting and swiping the packaging for contamination before delivering the package to the AU; • managing the radioactive waste program for the campus, overseeing preparation of shipments of some materials for disposal, and holding others for decay and subsequent disposal as appropriate; • identifying, evaluating, and assessing critical potential health hazards by examining the work environment, operations, and processes, collecting and analyzing samples, presenting specific conclusions, and making recommendations for immediate corrective actions, as appropriate; The RSO routinely assesses the existing RSP for adequacy in safety and regulatory compliance, recommending any necessary modifications, to ensure program design reflects the most recent standards and regulations and adheres to the principle of ALARA. It is expected that the RSO will be available 24/7 to respond to emergency calls or events involving radioactive materials, or that he or she will have designated a qualified person, such as the Assistant RSO, authorized to act in his or her behalf. Working hours are Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm. Minimum Requirements: This position requires a Bachelors degree in or related to Health Physics, Radiological Science, Biological Science, Engineering or related scientific discipline. Must have wide ranging experience and advanced knowledge and experience related to the management of a comprehensive ionizing radiation safety program that includes an Agreement State Radioactive Materials (RAM) license. A CHP/NRRPT certification is preferred. Qualified applicant must have extensive understanding of the functions and administration of a broad scope RAM license and regulatory compliance requirements imposed by an Agreement State, such as Arkansas; and must have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Applicant must be a self-motivated and task-oriented team player with demonstrated strengths of customer service, interpersonal, organizational, presentation, planning, and leadership skills. Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential. The position requires maintenance of DOT training and certification in the handling of radioactive materials (49CFR Subpart H). Preferred Qualifications: A Masters degree is preferred. A minimum of 5 years of related experience is required, with 10 years experience preferred.
