The incumbent serves as a Park Ranger - Interpretive Specialist - focused on managing the Chesapeake Bay Gateway and Watertrails Network, the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail (CAJO), and the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail (STSP).  Major duties include, but are not limited to: * Assists Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network sites and CAJO and STSP sites and segments in developing interpretation and education programs to promote public education of and access to the Chesapeake Bay and associated resources. * Leads and/or facilitates the development of comprehensive interpretive plans, including gathering information, leading planning sessions, and preparing drafts and final documents; serves as intperetive representative on a variety of planning and product teams; * Leads and/or facilitates the development of specific site interpretive plans or specific media plans, either independently or as a leader or member of a planning team; * Provides technical assistance to local and state governments, non-profit organizations and citizen groups on a wide variety of issues related to interpretation and education within the Chesapeake Bay watershed; advises and assists regarding interpretive principles, methods and media. Physical Demands and  Working Conditions:  Work is predominantly in an office environment.  However, some physical exertion is required during site visits and trips to inspect problems and porjects.  This can involve wading in water, hiking over rolling or rocky terrain and exposure to adverse weather conditions.     Area Information:  Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, is located approximately 25 miles east of Washington DC and 20 miles south of Baltimore. Celebrated as America’s sailing capital, Annapolis sits on the Chesapeake Bay and has a deep and lengthy maritime heritage. The city has 37,000 residents but, as a tourist destination, attracts many times that number annually. The county surrounding Annapolis has over 500,000 residents. Educational institutions include St. John’s College and the US Naval Academy. The city has a large number of restaurants, shops and all amenities associated with a state capital near a large metropolitan area. Summer temperatures are generally warm and humid and winters are usually mild.

You will conduct basic research of topics for the purpose of providing interpretive programs, both orally and/or in writing.  Present a variety of formal and informal programs including orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations and campfire programs.   Inform visitors about park facilities and resources.  Duties are performed on or off-site at locations designated by the park, e.g. visitor centers, campgrounds, historical sites, auditoriums, etc.  Provide assistance in connection with one-time or annual celebrations related to the programs and themes of the park and assists in the operations of special events.   Serve as a member of the canal boat crew, a costumed interpretation and cultural history demonstration aboard a mule-drawn canal boat.  Perform multiple positions on the crew, including linesman, captain and interpreter while wearing period clothing.   Assist with daily care of park’s mules including feeding, watering, maintaining a shelter, securing fencing or a corral, and reporting all injured stock to an appropriate person for more advanced treatment when needed. Lead mules in a responsible manner and only after receiving appropriate training.    Perform various administrative duties, e.g. scheduling, gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, etc.
