The seasonal recruitment operations center is currently accepting applications to fill 1 temporary position at Flagstaff Area Monuments.  Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year.  Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow.  ANTICIPATED EOD:  Spring 2010 One vacancy at Flagstaff Area Monuments in Flagstaff, Arizona.  Flagstaff, Arizona has a population of approximately 55,000 and is at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Flagstaff is located 80 miles from Grand Canyon National Park. The incumbent will serve as a Level II Law Enforcement Commissioned Ranger with the Flagstaff; Area Monuments (Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments), The incumbent is responsible for .performing law enforcement duties including detection, investigation, apprehension, detention, and prosecution under the provisions of applicable-laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of National Park resources.  These positions perform investigations, and patrols developed areas and critical cultural resource/archaeological areas by vehicle and on foot.  These positions provide for basic law enforcement functions and emergency services, to protect park- natural and cultural resources, visitor centers, entrance stations, and assist other agencies in the greater Flagstaff area.   Government quarters may be available.  Selectee may live in shared government quarters.  Shared quarters do not provide facilities for housing family members and pets are not allowed. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Rigorous field work requires above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning.  This includes prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring agility and dexterity. Duties often involve working in isolated outdoor environments while exposed to severe weather conditions.  Dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended many of whom are known to carry weapons.  There is a high-stress component associated with much of the incumbent's work assignment. WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Duties require extended periods of outdoor work and exposure to conditions including temperatures well below freezing to in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.   Investigations are conducted on foot, in four-wheel drive vehicles, or other forms of conveyance in remote back country settings.  Emergency service and law enforcement work requires entry into hazardous environments, exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances, and potential exposure to infectious diseases.  Long periods of surveillance work may be required in cramped or unpleasant locations and under unpleasant conditions.  A wide range of personal protective equipment and clothing is required to be used and work, some of which may be uncomfortable, hot or inconvenient to wear.  Adherence to specific safety procedures and other precautions is required.

The incumbent will serve as the primary Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) Park Ranger.  Performs a variety of tasks associated with the use and management of park resources and visitor protection, often those located in the backcountry areas.  The incumbent will supervise/lead a crew of five seasonal PSAR Rangers and up to fifty volunteers. Supervises in-park and regional distribution and execution of the hiking safety program. Performs emergency medical services (EMS) at the EMT-Basic level and supervises other park employees during emergency operations. Advises visitors concerning hiking safety, heat illness, accident prevention, and proper and authorized use of park hiking trails.

The incumbent manages the Village interpretive staff located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park.  The operation includes a staff of up to ten permanent GS-05/07/09 park rangers; up to 12 seasonal park aids GS-01 through 05; and occasionally several VIPs.  The incumbent is responsible for designing, planning, implementing and directing a complex program of interpretive services.  Program includes guided hikes and walks, formal interpretive talks, illustrated and non-illustrated evening programs, and demonstrations.  Up to 60 interpretive activities may be scheduled in a single week.  Major themes include:  Geology, natural history, human history, and current resource management issues.
