As a Security Guard, you will be responsible for the following duties. The primary purpose of this position is to protect Federal property from hazards such as sabotage, trespass, theft, fire, and accidental or willful damage and destruction.  Serves as an installation entry controller ensuring positive entry and exit control to and from the installation. Verifies personal identification data and credentials to ensure that only authorized personnel, vehicles, and equipment are permitted onto the installation; and that all persons have a valid need for entry.  Processes applications, prepares and issues temporary visitor and vehicle passes. Enters all required data into the Security Forces database. Ensures visitors are informed of applicable security requirements and provides directions when needed. Denies entry to any and all unauthorized personnel in order to avoid possible pilferage of government property, interference with base operations, sabotage, espionage, or terrorist threats.  Reacts to incidents involving security breaches, potential threats to persons or installation facilities and property, and alarms involving priority resources located on base.  Patrols the installation on foot or in vehicles; responds to alarms, irregularities, and unusual or suspicious circumstances; and investigates the incidents.  Performs integrated base defense functions. Defends installation personnel, equipment, and resources from hostile ground attack. Participates in tactical base defense postures as a member of a quick reaction force to deny infiltration or attack.

Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota, 75 miles east of Rapid City (population 57,000) and 30 miles from Wall, Kadoka, and Philip. Shopping and medical and dental facilities are available in Wall, Kadoka, Philip, and Rapid City. Limited grocery shopping, service station, K-8 grade school and post office are located in Interior (2 miles from park headquarters). Shopping, medical and dental facilities, and schools K-12 are available in Wall, Kadoka, Philip, and Rapid City.  Limited housing for rent or purchase is available in the surrounding towns of Wall, Philip, and Kadoka. The area is a beautiful place to live and raise a family, but winters can be harsh with occasional cold temperatures, high winds and blizzard like conditions.  Summers can be hot and dry with temperatures topping 100 degrees.  For additional information, call Register to View or go to www.nps/gov/badl. This is the position of a non-supervisory Park Ranger in the Resource Protection and Public Use Management Program. The Ranger in this position has received formal and on-the-job training in general Ranger duties and responsibilities and in the specific duties and responsibilities involved in the Resource Protection and Public Use Management Program of the park.
