Marathon Petroleum Company LP has an opening for a Safety Manager at its renery located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This position is located in the Environmental, Safety & Security (ESS) organization and reports to the Director, Environmental, Safety & Security.

*This position does include relocation.

Overview

This refinery leadership position is responsible for implementing industry best practices related to occupational safety and emergency response that are consistent with company policies and procedures for safe work practices, injury prevention, fire prevention/protection initiatives and risk reduction, emergency preparedness and response and contractor safety management. The Safety Manager supports the Refinerys commitment for continuous improvement of Environmental, Health, Safety and Security performance. The Safety Manager evaluates personnel and fosters the technical safety knowledge, safety leadership, and career development of their staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, refining industry practices, and MPC initiatives by developing and supervising the implementation of safety policies and procedures, implementing corporate safety initiatives, and evaluating compliance with safety policies and procedures applicable to the Refinery Area Teams, Projects and TAR.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of refinery processes, engineering controls, administrative controls, injury & illness controls, and new safety developments that will impact the refinery.
  • Provide timely and accurate guidance to ESS Leadership and leaders of the areas they support on all safety matters impacting their areas of responsibilities.
  • Strategically distribute Safety Groups workload to ensure that both program and project deadlines are met. Maintain assigned workloads in a flexible environment to meet the changing needs of the refinery and regulatory timelines.
  • Support the ongoing implementation of the SAFETY1, Safety Leadership program to continue to enhance a strong personal and process safety culture.
  • Coach and mentor Safety Professionals in development of communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills to foster strong working internal and external relationships which aid in strong safety programs and initiatives.
  • Engage all site personnel to establish a culture in which health, safety, and fire prevention are fully integrated in day-to-day operations.
  • Ensure the safety team provides high quality safety support to address field safety issues during normal operations, maintenance activities and outages.
  • Supervise and support Safety Professionals through setting annual goals and objectives including mentoring/coaching, providing periodic performance reviews and annual evaluations, and assisting in the department hiring process.
  • Monitor emerging safety issues throughout the industry and initiate proactive gap closure actions of industry best practices

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum (Required) Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety or equivalent degree preferred
  • Must have at least 5 years of related work experience in a refinery or petrochemical facility
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator) and be able to physically perform all field required tasks.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • A valid drivers license is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification
  • Supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of Refining operations and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of OSHA General Industry (1910) and Contractor (1926) Standards
  • Ability to collaborate and productively influence decisions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational and planning skills, facilitation skills, computer skills (Microsoft; Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • The ability to achieve results through interaction with others
