    The Yakima County Civil Service Commission is now accepting applications to form a register of eligible candidates for the position of LATERAL Law Enforcement Dispatcher with the Yakima County Sheriff's Office. Candidates must have one year of Law Enforcement Dispatch experience to be eligible to apply.

    Selection Procedure:

    Applications and required documentation will be accepted and reviewed at the end of each week. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of past experience and training. Applicants claiming veterans preference eligibility will be required to complete the Application for Veterans Preference Form.

Essential Duties:

Answers and responds to emergent / non-emergent calls from the public and business calls directed to the Sheriffs Office. Assesses and determines priority of the call and availability of response units; elicits pertinent information from callers and disseminates the information received to law enforcement and other public safety agencies. Responds to general law and civil questions from the public and law enforcement.

Receives, transmits and relays sensitive information by simultaneously operating radios, multi-line telephone systems, computer terminals, private line intercom systems and other telecommunication devices for multiple agencies. Monitors in-office video surveillance displays.

Reviews and proofs Civil and Warrant Division documents. Verifies data provided and ensures accuracy of documents.

Develops and maintains working relationships with the community, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement and court contacts. Provides staff support to the 7 agencies we dispatch for at all times to include Spillman knowledge, WA state law and civil knowledge. Provides technical support to all Spillman agencies in our county to change and update passwords for the system. Run subjects and items in our state and national systems for Juvenile Detention, Yakima Co Jail for wants and orders. Coordinates efforts between agencies, staff, providers, volunteers and the public.

Organizes, maintains, compiles and accurately records data into or from computer and logs. Writes law enforcement reports. Writes supplemental reports to support Deputy and Law Enforcement Officer reports. Enters and clears stolen property, vehicles, missing people and court orders into our local system along with the Washington State and National Crime computer systems. Enters inquiries into the National Crime Information Center, Washington Crime Information Center and Department Of Licensing systems and disseminates the information while staying compliant with all agency standards.

Maintains the integrity of the agency and limits liability exposure by complying with local, state and federal laws when working with the public.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED plus one year of Law Enforcement Dispatch experience. Must be in good standing with your current/past Law Enforcement position. Must be actively employed or a dispatcher within a year. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Special Requirements :

This is a position requires law enforcement dispatch experience. This position requires work on a rotating shift basis to include nights, weekends and holidays.

This is a civil service position, Civil Service Rules and Regulations apply.

Preferred:

Bilingual English/Spanish

Use of radios and multi line telephone

Knowledge of Yakima County area and communities

Equipment Used:

Spillman Computer System; to look up in house information on subjects, businesses, vehicles, property and crime history for law enforcement purposes.

Rapid Responder system, school safety

Offender Watch, sex offender system

Department of Licensing; look up vehicles and people not in our in house system

ACCESS/WACIC/NCIC Systems; to query and enter people, orders, property and warrants in the state and national systems, inquire, view and disseminate criminal information

Multi-phone and Radio systems; communication to and between the public and law enforcement

Fax Machine; to receive and send sensitive information between agencies

Printer; print information from State and Access systems

TTY machine; used to communicate with deaf or mute subjects

Recording Repeater; used to play back phone and radio transmissions

Security cameras for Sheriff Office, schools and Precinct 3

Knowledge:

Research / records experience; finding and pulling information on a daily basis

Cartography experience (ability to read maps)

Basic recordkeeping theories

Office practices

Skills (and abilities):

Telephone skills and etiquette.

Ability to multi-task

Answering multi-line phone lines

Understanding and retaining oral information

Maintaining file systems

Interpreting information received through computer entry

Using computer and related software

Communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information
