We are accepting applications for the Campus Security Officer on an ongoing basis to develop a pool of qualified candidates for future opportunities. While there may not be an immediate opening, applications will be reviewed as positions become available.
Under the direction of supervision, the Campus Security Officer performs physical security, loss prevention, emergency response, safety monitoring and minor maintenance duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Provides support to other college departments in support of college operations and academic mission.
2. Enforces college regulations and policies in a reasonable, fair and consistent manner.
3. Builds and maintains effective professional relationships with students, employees and the general public demonstrating behaviors that establish respect, dignity and trust.
4. Monitors activities schedules and becomes familiar with campus programs and services.
5. Provides information and direction to the campus community and visitors upon request.
6. Admits or denies access to campus facilities and equipment as necessary.
7. Secures campus equipment and facilities utilizing proper access control guidelines; monitors the facilities and grounds for safety and security risks.
8. Demonstrates user level competency in operation of the campus Access Control and Surveillance systems.
9. Patrols the campus regularly on foot or by vehicle as assigned.
10. Provides first aid as requested and provides access to contact emergency medical services.
11. Provide crowd and traffic control as necessary.
12. Communicates information using two-way radio, phone and computer software; responds to calls for service.
13. Investigates suspicious activities and safety concerns; takes necessary action as deemed appropriate utilizing approved methods and standards.
14. Reports safety concerns, security concerns and emergency situations to the local emergency services and proper campus administrators as necessary.
15. Coordinates with campus administrators and emergency services in response to non-emergency and emergency situations as necessary.
16. Assists Physical Resources staff in monitoring preventative maintenance and operation of mechanical, access control, fire, and other safety related equipment to assure proper working order.
17. Demonstrates user level competency in operation of the campus safety systems and emergency notification systems.
18. Monitors and responds to alarms associated with physical plant, fire detection, access control systems.
19. Prepares work order requests and makes calls for emergency repairs as necessary.
20. Performs light maintenance duties on a limited basis such as minor mechanical repairs, janitorial duties and snow removal; utilizes hand tools, preforms preventative vehicle maintenance and operate small tractors or trucks for snow removal.
21. Monitors Western parking lots for compliance with posted parking restrictions; issues warning tickets for unauthorized or unsafe parking as necessary.
22. Keeps notes of important shift activities and incidents and communicates information effectively verbally and in written form.
23. Documents incidents using appropriate computer software or handwritten reports as necessary.
24. Remains flexible to the changing environment adapting to different situations.
25. Testifies in campus administrative disciplinary hearings and civil/criminal courts providing information and documentation of incidents.
26. Seeks out work related employee development opportunities and participates in all required employee training programs and activities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 45 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds as an essential function of the position. A pre-employment physical will be required to verify the ability to safely perform these specific functions. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in conditions and may work near video display. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
The requirements listed below are representative the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
One (1) to three (3) years of post-high school training in security operations or emergency services operations
Preferred: Within these years of experience, one (1) to three (3) years of previous position-specific work experience at a public institution
To be age 21 at the time of hire as required by local ordinance and state law to effectively enforce College policy concerning alcoholic beverages on College property.
Pass a pre-employment physical
Pass a pre-employment background check
Possess a valid driver's license
Maintain an acceptable driving record in compliance with College's requirements
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of Security, Safety, and Loss Prevention Operations
Microsoft Office Programs, e.g. Word, Excel, etc.
Best practices of physical security and asset protection.
College guidelines, regulations and policies.
Local ordinances, state and federals laws common to incidents experienced on campus.
College emergency management procedures and has an awareness level of the principles of the National Incident Management System.
Ability to:
Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Prioritize and manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions
Manage typical and crisis situations efficiently and effectively
Diffuse volatile and stressful situations
Conduct first aid and CPR
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Use small hand tools and to perform light maintenance duties
Work with minimal supervision
Work shift work, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed
Equivalency Statement
For those candidates who do not exactly meet all minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, may be accepted.
