Florissant, MO 63031. ______________________________________________ POSITION TITLE: Safety Monitor REPORTS TO: Director and Assistant Director of School Safety POSITION SUMMARY The Safety Monitor supports a safe, secure, and positive school environment by supervising students in common areas, monitoring behavior, and assisting with the enforcement of school and district policies. This position promotes positive student interactions while maintaining a visible presence throughout the school. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Monitor students in the hallways and common areas throughout the school day, including arrival, passing periods and dismissal Develop and maintain positive relationships with students and staff to support a safe and respectful school culture Patrol halls, corridors, stairwells, and restrooms to ensure compliance with school rules and district policies Identify and report safety concerns, unsecured areas, and hazardous conditions to administrators and security personnel Observe and report student behavior that may lead to disruptions, conflicts or safety concerns Intervene appropriately in student conflicts and promptly report incidents to administrators and/or security staff Maintain communication with the school office and security staff using portable radios Verify student hall passes and direct students without autorization to the appropriate office Escort students to designated areas such as office, guidance counselors, or classrooms as needed Monitor restrooms for safety and appropriate use (assistance will be requested when necessary) Report unauthorized or wandering students to the office or security staff Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors and/or building administrators QUALIFICATIONS H igh school diploma or equivalent required Ability to de-escalate and manage confrontational situations effectively Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and good judgment when interacting with students, faculty and parents Understanding of student behavior and development Ability to assess situations and respond appropriately Demonstrated maturity and professionalism in interactions with others Ability to meet the physical demands of the position WORKING CONDITIONS/MENTAL DEMANDS Ability to communicate effectively and follow verbal instructions Ability to maintain emotional control and make sound decisions in stressful situations Frequent interaction with students in a fast-paced school environment PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, including long distances Ability to bend, stoop, reach and climb stairs or ramps Ability to hear and speak clearly in environments with moderate to high noise levels Manual dexterity to handle equipment and small objects Ability to lift, push, and/or pull objects weighing approximately 15-75 pounds PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT 9.5-month position (school-year schedule) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position. This position provides proactive monitoring, responds to safety concerns, and supports the overall educational environment through visibility, communication, and enforcement of district policies. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION Patrol school campuses and district property before, during and after school hours to ensure safety and security Monitor and screen individuals entering school grounds to verify authorization and report unauthorized persons Maintain a high level of awareness to identify and address potential safety or security concerns Respond to and report incidents involving students, staff, visitors or district property Prepare accurate, timely and detailed incident reports as required Identify and correct or report hazardous or unsafe conditions affecting students, staff or the public Assist with traffic control and pedestrian safety during arrival, dismissal and school events Support administrators and staff in maintaining order and addressing disruptions Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, families and community members Adjust work schedule as needed to support district events and activities Perform other duties as assigned by the Director/Assistant Director of School Safety or Lead Safety Officer QUALIFICATIONS Minimum age of twenty-one (21) years High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required Valid state-issued driver's license required Current Metropolitan St. Louis County Security Officer License required Strong observational, communication and problem-solving skills Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in high-pressure situations Demonstrated professionalism and ability to interact effectively with diverse populations EXPERIENCE Prior experience in school security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods, including indoors and outdoor Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and intervene when necessary Ability to work in varying weather conditions and environments Ability to lift, push, or pull moderate weight as needed Ability to communicate effectively in environments with moderate to high noise levels ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position.
